Why I Chose To Do Hello Fresh
We asked @justlikegranny to share her reasons for incorporating the meal-kit service, Hello Fresh into her cooking routine. FYI - She also shared her discount codes with us at the end .
As you have probably noticed, almost every night on my TikTok account as @justlikegranny, I go live making a Hello Fresh meal. I chose to start doing it for three reasons. They may sound mundane or unorthodox to you, but to me they were completely justified and have helped me out plenty!
Lets begin with a reality check;
What is a Hello Fresh?
Hello Fresh is part of a new line of home delivered meal-kit prep kits or “boxes”. They are sold on a subscription based plan providing everything needed to prepare and make a full meal. You can read more at www.hellofresh.com
Not everyone is going to like Hello Fresh
That is perfectly ok. Some may find it limiting, while others will just love it! You may find local versions of similar meal-kit services near you.
Do I like every recipe they give me?
Not really, but, like @Frank_MentorSF says “You don’t have to like it but, you have to try it at least once!”.
So, why did I switch?
I wanted to my reduce food waste
The first reason I chose to start doing Hello Fresh is because, as a food content creator we spend tons of money on food and most of it goes to waste or winds up in the trash. It also bothers me wasting so much food when I grew up poor and food was hard to come by for us, giving me a guilty conscience that I just don’t like having the burden of carrying. So by using Hello Fresh they give me perfect portion sizes for my David and I for dinner each night while I create content for lunch everyday for TikTok. Do we still have some leftovers? Yes, we do and sometimes that winds up in the trash as well. But, it’s not nearly as much as we used to throw away.
Saving money is important to me
The second reason was about saving us money. I was buying way over my monthly food budget for content and I didn’t even make that money back for what I was putting in. But now, I’m spending anywhere from $60-$80 a week for eight meals for two, and keeps us right on track with our budgeting. This is also great because David and I would like a bigger home in the future. Just like any young couple desires to do as far as goals go in my opinion. Plus, I’d REALLY LOVE a bigger kitchen. *hint hint*
Keeping my weight in-line
Third and lastly, one of the biggest reasons why was weight awareness. In the past, at my highest weight I weighed 320lbs. I now weigh 160lbs and would like to keep it that way. Growing up in a small town southern influenced environment, portion sizes weren’t a thing. They say “weight runs in the family” but, it’s not that weight runs in the family, it’s that the family all sits at the same table. Meaning we all eat what our grandparents taught us to eat. For example, adding that delicious jar of gold, also known as bacon grease, to a lot of our foods results in skyrocketing our calorie intake.
By doing Hello Fresh, I am retraining my mind to learn what healthy portions look like as well as the role of a balanced meal. Things such as the ratio of carbohydrates to protein to leafy greens that we need on each plate to not only feel full but, get the adequate nutrients that we need from each meal. As an added benefit, it helps David and I keep not only our weights in check but our mental and over all health in check as well. This is just the case for David and I because we suffer with body image and food issues.
But remember, all bodies are beautiful and your weight and how you were made is perfectly fine.
In conclusion I chose Hello Fresh for the following reasons; to waste less, spend less and be healthier. All great reasons for me to use Hello Fresh for the time being. I don’t really have any meals I’d love to eat again from them constantly but, a few of their ideas, sauces and salads helped me out a lot.
I enjoyed the sesame mayonnaise quite a bit and the pan fried cod was also a favorite of mine. I’ve learned how to make better salad dressing quick and easily.
Another great take-away is I love is how simple and quick it is to get a meal on the table.
You use minimal things and much of the seasoning is mainly up to you, but it mainly sticks to salt and pepper, which is great for a sensitive tummy like mine.
If you’d like to try out Hello Fresh for yourself I have a code for my Swedish and my American friends provided in my linktree on my TikTok or Instagram profile or visit hellofresh.com and add the codes from the image below..
