Spam Musubi Bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 can of spam cut into 5 slices, then cut into spears or chunks

  • 1 shallot , sliced

  • 2 cups white rice

  • 1 egg

  • ¼ cup green onions, chopped

  • 2 tablespoons furikake seasoning

  • 2-3 tablespoons neutral oil, for cooking

    Teriyaki Sauce

  • ¼ cup soy sauce

  • 2 tablespoon sesame oil

  • 2 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 tablespoon mirin

  • 1-2 tablespoon water

Directions

  1. Cook your rice according to package directions. (We are using a rice cooker) When it is finished, stir in furikake seasoning.

  2. Mix the Teriyaki sauce ingredients in a bowl and set aside

  3. Using the neutral oil, sauté the shallot slices and set aside.

  4. Fry the spam until desired crispiness, about 2-3 minutes. Lower the heat and pour the teriyaki sauce over the spam and continue cooking for another 3 minutes or until it is caramelized.

  5. In a separate pan over medium heat, crack an egg into the pan. Let the bottom start to turn white, then add 2 tablespoons of water. Put the lid on top, drop the heat to low, and don’t touch it for two minutes. The steam produced cooks the top of the egg, and it will remain runny in the middle.

  6. In a serving bowl, add a portion of rice to the bottom, then shallots, spam, chopped green onion, and furikake seasoning. You can also make additional teriyaki sauce to drizzle on top of your dish. You can also create a dome shape if you wish with your rice, you can get creative here! And enjoy!
