Patty Melt
This iconic sandwich features a juicy beef patty, caramelized onions, and melted cheese, all nestled between two slices of toasted rye bread.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
Salt and pepper to taste
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
8 slices rye bread (or your preferred bread)
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices cheddar cheese
4 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional, for grilling)
Directions
Cook the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown (about 15-20 minutes). Set aside.
Make the Patties: Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape into thin, oblong patties (to fit the bread). Season both sides with salt and pepper. Cook the patties in the same skillet over medium-high heat until browned and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
Assemble the Sandwich: Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread (this is optional but helps with golden toasting). Place the bread mayonnaise-side down. On half of the bread slices, layer Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, caramelized onions, and cheddar cheese. Top with the remaining slices of bread.
Grill the Patty Melts: In the skillet over medium heat, grill the sandwiches, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted (about 3-4 minutes per side).
Serve Hot: Slice the patty melts in half and enjoy your gooey, savory creation!
