Greek Meatballs (Keftedakia)

Keftedes, or keftedakia, are Greek meatballs. These flavorful meatballs are perfect as appetizers or a main dish. They are equally good at room temperature, making them great for gatherings or picnics. Served with pilaf, vegetables, and salad, they make a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground round

  • ½ cup grated onion

  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano

  • ⅛ teaspoon dried mint

  • 1 or 2 slices white bread

  • ½ cup dry white wine or water

  • 1 egg

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground meat, grated onion, garlic, salt, pepper, oregano, and mint.

  2. Remove the crusts from the bread slices and moisten them with the wine or water. Add the moistened bread and the egg to the meat mixture, then knead until well combined.

  3. Shape the mixture into cylinders about the size of your palm.

  4. Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat and sauté the meatballs until browned on all sides and fully cooked.

  5. Once cooked, transfer them to a covered casserole dish and keep warm until ready to serve.
