Christmas Crack

Saltine crackers transform into Christmas Crack! A homemade toffee is poured over the crackers, along with additional toppings, that makes a great holiday treat

Ingredients

  • 1 sleeve of saltine crackers (about 40 crackers)

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) of unsalted butter

  • 1 cup of brown sugar, packed

  • 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • Optional toppings: chopped nuts, crushed candy canes, sprinkles, or sea salt

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper, and spray it with nonstick cooking spray.

  2. Place the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, salted side up.

  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until it begins to boil. Let it boil for 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly.

  4. Carefully pour the hot toffee over the crackers, spreading it evenly with a spatula to coat all the crackers. Place the baking sheet in the oven for 5 minutes or until the toffee is bubbly.

  5. Remove the tray from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let them sit for 2-3 minutes to soften, then spread the melted chocolate evenly with a spatula.

  6. Sprinkle with your choice of nuts, candy canes, or sprinkles while the chocolate is still warm. Let the Christmas Crack cool at room temperature or in the refrigerator until the chocolate hardens completely (about 1-2 hours). Once set, break it into bite-sized pieces and enjoy!
