Thankful Spiced Cider

Ingredients

  • 12 oz apple cider (your choice)

  • 1 “arm” of a star anise (use more if you prefer a stronger licorice flavor)

  • 3-4 whole cloves

  • ¼ cinnamon stick

  • 1 orange slice, plus an additional slice for garnish

  • 1 tbsp piloncillo (grated using a microplane grater), plus extra for garnish

  • 2 oz spiced rum

Directions

  1. In a small pot, add the apple cider, the “arm” of star anise, cloves, cinnamon stick, orange slice, and 1 tablespoon of grated piloncillo.

  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the spices and piloncillo to infuse, stirring occasionally to dissolve the piloncillo. Meanwhile, add 2 oz of spiced rum to your favorite glass mug.

  3. After simmering, strain the infused cider mixture directly into the mug over the rum, removing the whole spices.

  4. Garnish with an additional orange slice on the rim and a sprinkle of extra grated piloncillo on top for added sweetness and texture.
