Loaded Southern Fried Cabbage

Experience the rich flavors of the South with this Loaded Southern Fried Cabbage recipe. Sautéed in bacon grease and seasoned with onions, garlic, and red bell pepper, this dish is elevated with a hint of heat from red chili flakes. Simmered to perfection in chicken stock, the cabbage becomes tender and loaded with irresistible taste. A true comfort food with a delightful twist!

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, shredded

  • 2 tablespoons bacon grease

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 red bell pepper, diced

  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili flakes (adjust to your spice preference)

  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

  • 1/2 cup chicken stock • Black pepper to taste

Directions

  1. In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the bacon grease over medium heat until it melts and coats the pan evenly.

  2. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they become translucent and slightly caramelized.

  3. Stir in the minced garlic, diced red bell pepper, and red chili flakes. Cook for another 2 minutes until the flavors blend and the bell pepper softens.

  4. Add the shredded cabbage to the pan and toss it with the other ingredients until it’s well coated in the bacon grease mixture.

  5. Pour in the chicken stock and season with salt. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pan, and let the cabbage simmer for about 20 minutes, or until it reaches your desired tenderness. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  6. Once the cabbage is tender and infused with flavors, adjust the seasoning with black pepper to taste.

  7. Remove from heat and serve the Loaded Southern Fried Cabbage hot as a delicious side dish or a flavorful main course.

Notes to Make It Better: • For an extra smoky flavor, you can use smoked bacon grease or add crumbled cooked bacon to the dish before serving. • To make it vegetarian, substitute bacon grease with olive oil or butter, and use vegetable stock instead of chicken stock.
